Documentary about Berlin in the 1950s, from a GDR point of view.

An allegorical documentary about the workers of the world, whose common destinies and hopes for peace are symbolically united by the rivers that run through their respective lands. The film was shot on the Volga, the Mississippi, the Nile, the Yangtze, the Amazon and the Ganges and combines these images of five continents with the music of Dmitri Shostakovich and the poetry of both Bertolt Brecht and Paul Robeson.

A German soldier on leave in Berlin goes looking for his pen pal who he has never met called Gisela. He meets instead a woman with the same name and falls in love with her.

For Balduin, going out to beer parties with his fellow students and fighting out disputes at the tip of the sword have lost their charms. He wants to find love; but how would he, a penniless student, ever dare looking up to any woman worth of loving? Absorbed in his dreary thoughts and indifferent to the advances of Lyduschka, Balduin is unexpectedly offered a fortune by the mysterious money-lender Scapinelli - but on a strange condition...

Hinrich, the son of a feudal German landowner, falls in love with the beautiful daughter of one of his father's serfs despite opposition from both families. But when he actually offers marriage to her, this is going too far. The return of his brother Detlev, with an unscrupulous aristocratic bride of his own and a rival claim to their father's estates, proves to be the trigger for tragedy.

A little girl falls into the hands of a hypnotist the morning after the assassination of a jeweler. A visitor of the uncomfortable host confesses himself as the perpetrator, the girl can testify and delivers the two villains of the police.

Dos jóvenes enamorados viajan en diligencia y, de repente, se une a los viajeros un misterioso desconocido. El vehículo se detiene en una posada, y el desconocido desaparece con el joven. La muchacha busca desesperadamente a su novio y, cuando descubre que es la Muerte quien se lo ha llevado, le implora que se lo devuelva. La Muerte le muestra tres velas (vidas) a punto de extinguirse y le explica que sólo podrá recuperarlo si logra salvar alguna de ellas.
