En la Navidad de 1877, Isabel de Austria (Sissi), celebra su 40º cumpleaños. Primera dama de Austria, mujer del emperador Francisco José I, no tiene derecho a expresarse y debe mantenerse hermosa y joven para siempre en su papel de emperatriz. Para satisfacer estas expectativas, adopta un estricto régimen de ayuno, ejercicios, peluquería y medición diaria de su cintura. Two security guards are holding a job interview in their downstairs office at a prominent club in Budapest while the Saturday night party is at full blast upstairs. A former arm-wrestling champion, Jani is applying to become a bouncer. The interview backfires and shortly afterwards a drunk girl falls victim of an incident on the dance floor. The film, set in today's Budapest, is a romantic dramedy about the lies of relationships and creation, in which the world of advertising, book publishing and social media collide with the accidental meeting of the two protagonists. As the burnt-out advertiser and the esoteric success author come into ever closer contact with each other, they become entangled in a web of their own emotions and well-constructed lies.

Budapest, 1944, en plena Segunda Guerra Mundial (1939-1945). Adolf Eichman dirige la deportación masiva de judíos húngaros al campo de exterminio de Auschwitz. Ángel Sanz-Briz (Zaragoza, 1910-Roma, 1980), un diplomático de la embajada española en Budapest, utilizó todos los medios a su alcance para salvar el mayor número de vidas posible. Para ello, emitió miles de visados y pasaportes que garantizaban la inmunidad de sus portadores, que llegaron a burlar en ocasiones a las autoridades alemanas y a sus colaboradores húngaros. Su actividad cesó cuando, en diciembre de 1944, le ordenaron regresar a España. Había logrado salvar a casi 5.000 judíos. Desde entonces, se le conoce como "El Ángel de Budapest". En 1989 el Yad Vashem nombró "Justos entre las Naciones" a él y sus descendientes.

En la noche del 16 de julio de 1942, 4.500 gendarmes del gobierno colaboracionista del Mariscal Pétain, que había firmado un pacto con Hitler y aceptado la ocupación de Francia por el ejército alemán, procedieron en París a una gigantesca redada, en la que 13.152 judíos fueron arrestados y posteriormente encerrados, en condiciones infrahumanas, en el Velódromo de invierno. Estaba previsto detener a 27.391 judíos, pero, aunque la mayoría de los franceses fueron colaboracionistas, una minoría participó en la Resistencia, tanto pasiva como activa, frente al invasor. La desobediencia civil de muchos ciudadanos y de algunos funcionarios permitió escapar a buena parte de los que habían sido previamente fichados y marcados con la estrella amarilla.
