Amidst the vast sugar plantations of Negros in Southern Philippines, a matriarch lies in the throes of death. Her children rush home to confront the crisis as news of the impending death of their well-loved mother spreads among the community. There, in their ancestral house, the siblings are forced to deal with the issues of inheritance, tradition and the family legacy. It is a familiar tale. After all, every family has its story. And to each one, its own deserved secrets.

Amigo se centra en Rafael Dacanay, cabeza del barrio de San Isidro, en una área arrocera de Luzón, Filipinas. Su hermano Simón, jefe de la guerrilla local, ha obligado a la Guardia Civil española a retirarse de su avanzada y encarga a Rafael que encarcele al Capitán de la guarnición y a un fraile español, el Padre Hidalgo, en nombre del gobierno revolucionario. Pero cuando el General Aguinaldo llegan, el oficial español y el Padre Hidalgo son liberados, una guarnición al mando del Teniente Ike Compton permanece para "proteger" el barrio. La política de ocupación estadounidense evoluciona de “corazones y mentes” a “concentración” (lo que se denominó “hamletting” durante la guerra de Vietnam) y Rafael tiene que responder tanto ante los americanos como ante los patriotas filipinos, con consecuencias mortales.
