En la Rusia postsoviética, los menores de edad problemáticos capturados en diversos delitos (desde robos a múltiples asesinatos) se han comprometido a estar unos años encerrados en escuelas estatales de reforma. Allí, viven en un régimen de estilo militar, empiezan el día con ejercicios al aire libre, hacen las camas, siguen absurdamente minuciosas normas, etc. Irónicamente, muchos vienen de un estilo de vida muy pobre y/o abusivo, a menudo de familias rotas; ahora tienen una vida estructurada con tres comidas, un dormitorio cálido y clases regulares, algunos realmente sienten miedo de volver a casa.
