El brigada Carotenuto, después de dejar el cuerpo de los carabineros, regresa a Sorrento, su ciudad natal. A su llegada, es recibido por su hermano, don Matteo, párroco de la ciudadela, y por el cuerpo de guardias urbanos, cuyo mando asumirá. El problema surge cuando se entera de que no podrá vivir en su casa natal, porque está ocupada por una joven viuda, doña Sofía, una hermosa pescadera, llamada "La brava".
