The bout served as both a title defense for MacDonald and a semi-final match in the Bellator Welterweight World Grand Prix. The event also featured a light heavyweight bout between former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida and Chael Sonnen, as well as a Bellator Bantamweight Championship bout between current champ Darrion Caldwell and Kyoji Horiguchi. The bout was a rematch from the 2018 meeting between the two that took place at RIZIN 14 on New Year's Eve.

Having competed for the UFC for the last four years, Mousasi opted to sign with Bellator MMA when his contract came up. Muhammed Lawal was scheduled to face Liam McGeary in a Light Heavyweight bout in the co-main event. However, on October 2, he pulled out of the fight due to an undisclosed injury. He was replaced by Bubba McDaniel. The following week, McGeary pulled out of the fight due to a thumb injury. Brennan Ward was scheduled to face David Rickels in a welterweight bout on the main card. However, on October 16, Ward was removed from the card due to injury and Rickels was pulled from the card as a result. Javier Torres was scheduled to face Neiman Gracie on this card, but pulled out due to injury. He was replaced with welterweight Zak Bucia.

The double main event also features Fedor Emelianenko (36-4, 1 NC), an MMA legend many consider to be the greatest heavyweight fighter of all-time, taking on Matt Mitrione (11-5) in a bout which will undoubtedly produce fireworks between the heavy-handed strikers.
