Tras quedarse huérfano en los años de la Gran Depresión, Pequeño Árbol, un niño cherokee de ocho años, decide ir a vivir a las montañas junto a sus abuelos: Bonnie, una mujer india, y Wales, un hombre blanco de origen escocés que ha asumido los valores de la tribu a la que pertenece su mujer. Con ellos y su amigo John Sauce, un indio con poderes mágicos, aprenderá a encontrar su camino en la vida. Basada en la novela homónima del escritor y líder segregacionista del KKK Asa Earl Carter, con el seudónimo de Forrest Carter.
