Al contrario que cualquier otra "edición especial" o "versión del director" lanzada en los últimos años, "Superman II: El montaje de Richard Donner" es un film muy diferente a "Superman II" de Richard Lester; la película está remontada e incluye muchas escenas nuevas, como 15 minutos de filmaciones de Marlon Brando. Se descartaron del montaje las secuencias cómicas y la película es así más oscura y dramática. Es una producción oficial realizada por Donner (no por fans) cuando tras el lanzamiento en cines de Superman Returns, el director pudo reunir suficiente dinero como para ponerla en orden y estrenarla directamente en el mercado de vídeo. Recibió críticas positivas de todos los medios y fue nominada a varios premios.
