Tom (Timothy Spall), un jubilado cuya esposa acaba de fallecer, viaja desde el punto más al norte de Gran Bretaña, John O'Groats, hasta su ciudad natal que se encuentra en el punto más al sur del país, utilizando su pase gratuito de autobús. Lleva consigo las cenizas de su esposa en una pequeña maleta, recorriendo todo el país para llevarla de regreso a casa. Sari is a young, beautiful and intelligent girl who is busy studying at university,but she suffers from epilepsy and has to face death on a daily basis. Mikko is hersomewhat older university teacher, who is tired of life, and who one day decides toabandon his wife, children and idea of a perfect life.
