Over many years of division, North and South Korea have become like a hall of mirrors where it is difficult to tell the real from the false. Inspired by real people who have traveled between North and South amid this division, this film depicts a relationship between the two that is so deeply skewed that it is impossible to tell what anyone is working to achieve.

En los años 70, durante la cúspide de la corrupción política, Gangnam, la zona sur de Seúl, comienza a transformarse en un área desarrollada. Jong-Dae y Yong-Ki, amigos desde la infancia, luchan por sobrevivir hasta que sus casas son derribadas por grupos de matones. Basada en el best seller de la escritora Gong Ji Young, trata un caso real de violación y abusos sexuales ocurridos en una escuela para sordomudos en Gwangju. Gong Yoo interpreta el papel de un profesor que descubre el caso al lado de una activista de derechos humanos, interpretada por Jeong Yu Mi. Juntos intentarán por todos los medios dar a conocer los hechos, a pesar de que para ello deban enfrentarse al personal docente y algunos oficiales que tratan de ocultar el incidente.

En esto Gwang Su, estudiante de medicina, halla accidentalmente un cadáver para su clase de autopsia.

Los ciudadanos de Gwangju llevan una vida relativamente pacífica, hasta que un día los militares se apoderan de la ciudad, acusan a los residentes de conspiración y afirman que son simpatizantes comunistas que preparan una revolución contra el gobierno actual. Al ver que los soldados golpean a personas indefensas, principalmente estudiantes, hasta matarlas, los ciudadanos están listos para tomar represalias y formar una milicia.

Yoon-hee is so harassed by her husband's obsession and frantic love, that even breathing is painful to her. One day, her sudden suicide attempt is foiled when someone takes her in his arms and saves her. Hyeong-joon is a rough-looking detective. He asks nothing, but maybe he knows that for some people, just being alive is hard enough. Yoon-hee goes looking for Hyeong-joon, and from the moment she sees him, feels that he already loves her deeply. Because she knows it is totally impossible to be free from her prison of marriage, the peace and happiness she feels at Hyeong-joon's side is heartbreaking and frightening. Hyeong-joon, used to his life of loneliness and despair, loves Yoon-hee at first sight, but as he can't do anything for her, just lets her go. The only thing he can do is to offer her and himself some comfort.

Rim Byeong-ho es un agente desertor de la inteligencia norcoreana que se pasa al bando de Corea del Sur escapando del Berlín Oriental en los años 80. A pesar de ello, las autoridades surcoreanas sospechan que la deserción de Rim es fingida, y lo asedian con interrogatorios y torturas...

The events that precede and follow, for each of those present in turn, when a young woman is asked for verification of her identity one time too many, in this case when presenting a check at a convenience store. Despite the repetition of the central scene the personal stories and consequences are interestingly varied and unpredictable. The problem for the central character is that her country allows her no usable identity following her change of sex. This was true for the lead actress, South Korea's most famed woman of transsexual history, Ha Ri-su, but that is about as far as the plot bears any resemblance to her actual life. Since the film was released the actress became, by a landmark court case, the first in her country to to be allowed proper recognition and papers. There are of course many other countries which still impose the same difficulties on similar young women.
