En São Paulo, en 1980, el joven obrero Tião y su novia María deciden casarse al saber que ella está embarazada. Al mismo tiempo, estalla una huelga en la fábrica donde trabaja Tião. El movimiento divide a los operarios. El temor a perder su trabajo y a no poder hacer frente a sus obligaciones, lo lleva a oponerse a la huelga y, por lo tanto, a su padre, un sindicalista que estuvo en la cárcel en los primeros años de la dictadura.
