Una niña aparece asesinada en el bosque de un pequeño pueblo suizo. Enseguida las sospechas recaen sobre el viejo vendedor ambulante que encontró el cadáver. Solamente el comisario Matei duda de su culpabilidad, pero se acaba de retirar y deja el caso en manos de un compañero. Mientras tanto, el anciano, incapaz de resistir la situación, se suicida en su celda. Ya en el aeropuerto, a punto de coger el avión, el comisario Matei repara en algunos detalles contados por los niños de la escuela y decide aplazar su viaje para empezar a investigar por su cuenta.

The sculptor Andreas promised his seriously ill childhood friend before her death that he would take care of her daughter Heidemarie. While his application for custody is going through the authorities, the young girl comes to her uncle and his wife. Both treat Heidemarie badly so she spends most of the time with Andreas and the hunchback beggar boy Peter. Finally, the time has come: Andreas is granted custody and also takes Peter in with him.

The titular Marie-Louise is a young French lass who is evacuated to Switzerland when her country is overrun by the Nazis. Suffering a nervous breakdown, she is given comfort and shelter by a wealthy family. Unfortunately, living in the lap of luxury makes Marie-Louise hesitant to return home to her mother and war torn home. Eventually the girl comes to her senses, but it isn't easy.
