In May of 2004, at an event dubbed "Generation Next" because of its intent to give a new generation of wrestlers a chance to shine, four men took it upon themselves to crash the party and change the landscape of Ring of Honor. Led by Alex Shelley, the group took the name Generation Next for themselves and thus began the ROH careers of Austin Aries, Roderick Strong, and Jack Evans. It was the eighth annual event in the Final Battle chronology, with the first taking place in 2002, but only the second to be broadcast live. It was the fifth ROH event to be shown as an online pay-per-view. The event saw the culmination of two rivalries, a year long battle between former tag team Kevin Steen and El Generico, as well as the feud between the Kings of Wrestling and the Briscoe Brothers. This was the first Survival of the Fittest tournament since 2007, as the 2008 tournament was canceled a few weeks before taking place and never rescheduled. This was the first Survival of the Fittest tournament not to included Austin Aries, who, despite appearing on the event, was instead teaming with Davey Richards in a dream tag team match against the Briscoe Brothers. Aries was the only wrestler to compete in every Survival of the Fittest tournament up to that point, always making it the final match. Hell Freezes Over was a wrestling event held by Ring of Honor. It took place on January 14, 2006 at the Pennsylvania National Guard Armory in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The show’s name comes from the main event, as ROH World Champion Bryan Danielson takes on Combat Zone Wrestling’s Chris Hero. The match came about after Danielson and Hero made several comments about each other on the internet. Danielson then sent an open contract for a shot at the ROH World Championship to CZW, who then signed Hero. Earlier in the day, CZW held An Afternoon of Main Events at the New Alhambra Arena in Philadelphia. During the show, Bryan Danielson, ROH Pure Champion Nigel McGuinness, and ROH Tag Team Champions Austin Aries and Roderick Strong jumped the guard rail, starting a fight with several CZW wrestlers. The show would be the start of the Ring of Honor vs. Combat Zone Wrestling feud, which would last for seven months.

Zone in Orlando, Florida. It was the first event under the Bound for Glory name and tenth event in the 2005 TNA PPV schedule. The show was promoted as TNA's premiere PPV event and their equivalent to the rival World Wrestling Entertainment's (WWE) WrestleMania. Ten professional wrestling matches and one pre-show match were featured on the card, three of which involved championships. The main event was for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, in which champion Jeff Jarrett fought the challenger Rhino with Tito Ortiz as Special Guest Referee. The match was originally Jarrett versus Kevin Nash with Ortiz as referee, however Nash was not cleared to wrestle due to a medical emergency. A Ten-Man Gauntlet match was held to determine Nash's replacement, which Rhino won.
