Sammy is a transgender child. She was born a boy but is living in stealth as a girl with the support of her mother and a doctor. At her new school, Sammy finds the friends she has always dreamed of having and tells them her secret in confidence. When the threat of a betrayal arises, Sammy must decide whether to run or to live as her whole self.

Haití no es el mejor lugar del mundo para vivir, pues es el país más pobre del mundo. Si no se vive bien en libertad, imagina cómo vivirán las personas que están recluidas en un manicomio, como es el caso del hermano del protagonista. Nuestro protagonista va a buscar a su hermano, que ha desaparecido en un manicomio haitiano, lo cual no es extraño pues en ese país las autoridades no existen y el control sobre los enfermos es nulo. Cuando llega al país consigue dar con el manicomio, pero pronto se da cuenta de que algo no va bien. Las personas que están recluidas allí tienen problemas mentales, pero lo que ocurre allí no tiene que ver con esta clase de problemas. Lo que nota es que los recluidos no están locos, sino que están poseídos por un espíritu maligno, que lo único que quiere es sangre, de forma que su vida estará en constante peligro.
