Tras el estallido de la guerra, el buque fue destruido por un crucero australiano, 50 hombres de la tripulación no estaban en el buque en el momento del hundimiento, ya que debían destruir una estación de radio en un pequeño atolón de las Islas Cocos en el Océano Índico. Ellos comandarán la goleta Ayesha hacia su casa, en un principio por un mar dominado por las tropas aliadas, y luego a través de los desiertos de Arabia.
