Año 1863. Etienne Lantier, despedido de la compañía de ferrocarriles por estar implicado en actividades sindicales, consigue trabajo en una mina del norte de Francia. Encuentra alojamiento en casa de la familia Maheus, donde todos son mineros y cuya hija, Catalina, se rinde a sus encantos. El trabajo es duro, mal pagado y peligroso. Cuando se enteran los mineros de que se les va a rebajar el salario, liderados por Lantier, se rebelan. La compañía decide contratar a otros obreros en su lugar y las autoridades reprimen a los rebeldes sin miramiento alguno.

Jean Faran tiene la desgracia de atropellar con su coche a una joven llamada Micaela. Una vez repuestos del susto, ella le invita a su casa a tomar unas copas. En realidad se trata de un artificio con el fin de que la indemnice de la supuesta pérdida de una joya valiosa. Él le entrega un cheque y se marcha. Al día siguiente, se da cuenta de que se dejó olvidado su reloj y acude de nuevo a casa de la chica. Pero su sorpresa es enorme cuando ve sacar el cadáver de Micaela, asesinada la noche anterior.

Two years later, the two gangsters run away from prison. Bob finds that Henri and Mado are husband and wife and have a daughter. In a panic, Henri runs for cover.

They seem about to be victorious when Brother Enrique, a monk formerly in the Holy Inquisition, finds a way to reverse the situation: accusing Agnès of witchcraft...

But finding the cause of death and the identity of the possible culprit will require more than a mere intuition.

A screen adaptation of the well-known novel by Roger Frison-Roche about the harsh lives of mountain guides and their families in the French Alps, near Chamonix and the French/Swiss/Italian borders... Like his father, Zian Servettaz is a dedicated mountain man. His Italian-born wife Bianca does not adjust well to his mountain village in France, and to the ever life-threatening dangers presented by his mountain guiding and climbing. She briefly returns to Italy and to her family. However, after Zian's insistence and trip to Italy, she returns to mountain life in the French Alps. Once back there, events will unfold, changing their lives as well as those of other mountain people forever.

A hotel for women-only and catering to working girls is the setting for not being able to get a USA PCA seal-of-approval for this French-film, but New York City's 55th Playhouse played it anyway. Along the way the audience meets the girl who sneaked her lover into her no-men-allowed room and her patch soon turns blue; a young lady with a passionate intensity who chooses another young lady as the object of her affections; the blindly-misguided director of the hotel, another lady of real easy virtue who is not the one who smuggled her lover into her room; and a girl who is only there as a procurer for a slavery ring.

The eponymous garçonne or flapper is Monique Lerbier, an emancipated French woman who leaves home to escape a marriage of convenience to a man she does not love which her parents have forced on her. She then falls into all sorts of carnal temptations and artificial pleasures previously unknown to her. These include her being seduced into a lesbian love affair by a chanteuse.

El éxito de 'La otra Madre' ('Visages d´enfants', 1923), dirigida por Jacques Feyder, motivó que le ofreciesen la adaptación al cine de la novela de tintes autobiográficos de Jules Renard 'Pelo de zanahoria' o 'Zanahorio', que también se tradujo así en España. Feyder escribió un guión que no se llegó a producir y otra empresa le propuso el reto a Julien Duvivier, quien desarrolló su propio guión. El film de Duvvivier, tan cruel y emotivo como el libro que narra la desgraciada infancia y adolescencia de un niño maltratado por su madre hasta el punto de tratar de suicidarse en dos ocasiones, no ha perdido ni su capacidad de emocionar ni su sorprendente tratamiento innovador.

Tourneur's first film tells the story of a chemist, Jules Renaudin. He welcomes a young pregnant girl, Claire, who enters his pharmacy in despair one evening. He takes care of her and gradually falls in love with her, doing everything for her. But she is attracted by the cheerfulness of young Jean Cordier, whose warehouse is a few steps away from the pharmacy.
