One of the most interesting adaptations of the material is The Karamazovs by Czech director Petr Zelenka. We witness a group of thesps from Prague on a trip to Krakow in Poland to stage the novel as a play in a derelict steelworks as part of the Closer to Life Festival. The project, however, is born under the bad sign, apparently doomed from the start. When they arrive, the roof is about to cave in, so that the actors are told to wear safety helmets. Their sole consistent audience is a laborer (Andrzej Mastalerz) who rather follows each dress rehearsal than watching over his seven-year-old son who has suffered a tragic accident in the factory.

Zarko (Roman Luknar) es un joven inmigrante rumano ilegal, perdido en Bilbao. Cervino) uno de los socios en la operación urbanística, con la promesa de conseguirle un pasaporte en regla, da empleo a Zarko: un trabajo humillante en el restaurante de su socia Maite (Carmen Elías), colaborando en sucias maniobras de extorsión destinadas a cobrar una antigua deuda. Una noche Zarko escribe una frase en una valla publicitaria de un horrible apeadero cuando aparece Inés, una joven fotógrafa. Animada por su amiga (Iciar Bollain) vuelve al apeadero y completa la frase para conseguir una cita en un bar de Bilbao. La relación que surge entre ellos significará la única posibilidad de él para salir del ambiente de delincuencia al que está abocado. Inés le ofrecerá su amistad e incluso, tal vez, su amor.

In WWII, Czechoslovakia split into the Slovak State and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. Former pilot Viktor Lesa works for the Slovak Railway Mail and often comes to the border town of Ludendorf, the former Czech town of Bfeclav. In order to impress a young female colleague, he redirects an important package. The Gestapo shows up in the town and Lesa together with a Jewish clerk, Tichacek, have to run for their lives . They ride a cargo train to Slovakia and they decide to escape to Hungary by crossing the Danube.
