En el corazón de Trieste vive Simone Segre, un conocido cirujano de origen judío: goza de una vida tranquila y aparentemente resuelta. Los duros conflictos con su padre, superviviente de un campo de concentración recientemente fallecido, lo han llevado, durante años, a distanciarse de él. Durante su práctica de remo, Simone auxilia a un hombre que ha sido víctima de un accidente automovilístico: pero cuando descubre un tatuaje nazi en su pecho lo abandona a su suerte. En los días sucesivos aflora el sentido de culpa por la muerte de ese hombre, sentimiento que le llevará a seguir a la familia del neonazi, que vive en un popular conjunto residencial. Una noche, la hija Marica llamará a la puerta de Simone, presentándole inconscientemente las deudas a saldar.
