Las divisiones Ariete, Trieste, Pavia y Brescia, los paracaidistas de Folgore y el batallón XXXI de Genio cumplen con su deber perfectamente, a pesar de las enormes dificultades a las que se enfrentan, con soldados en las líneas de frente, luchando contra la disentería y la sed, en condiciones imposibles, dentro de un entorno hostil en el que los hombres luchan diariamente por su supervivencia. La película se centra en las vidas íntimas y las experiencias emocionales de esos soldados atrapados en la batalla, revelando sus miedos y sus esperanzas.
