Historia
Na Renhua was born on November 17, 1962 in Xilinhot, Inner Mongolia. At the age of 13, she played a role in the film "Battlefield Yellow Flower" when she was still in the first year of junior high school. In 1978, she was admitted to the city song and dance troupe as a dancer. In 1979, she starred as the heroine Shang Xiaoli in the movie "Breast Swallow Fei", and was later transferred to the Xi'an Film Studio actor troupe, starring successively in "Love and Legacy", "Traitor", "Son of the Earth" etc. In 1982, Na Renhua was admitted to the undergraduate class of the Acting Department of Beijing Film Academy, and later won the Golden Rooster Queen for her outstanding performance in the film "Xiao Xiao".

Li Dong Hai is rushed off his feet every day at his job with the Disabled Federation. He helps everyone and never asks for anything in return. Once a culture with a great emphasis on raising horses on the grassy plains, they are encouraged to move into the cities to work as industrial workers. However, one family tries to resist this change, trying to raise money to send their child to school by selling yogurt. Unfortunately, this is hardly sufficient and they are forced to sell their beloved horses.

The film follows the rise and fall of a family in Shanghai. Once wealthy and capitalist, the family unraveled during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s and 1970s. Their home, once a French concession mansion, was converted into a multi-family dwelling.

Somiya
Bayinbulag and Somiya are brought up, from a young age, as brother and sister by their adoptive grandmother. The three live happily in a yurt on the Mongolian steppes. Just before Bayinbulag is to leave for the city, to be trained as a vet, the grandmother suggests that Bayinbulag and Somiya should eventually marry. Bayinbulag, now training to be a musician, stays away for long periods of time without communicating with Somiya. He finally comes back expecting to marry her.
Xiao Xiao
Xiao Xiao is sold into arranged marriage with a 2 year old boy, who she must raise as his nanny until he is old enough to marry her. She is expected to honour tradition and to toe the line so far as social proprieties are concerned, but the young girl rebels against the edicts of her elders until at 16, she falls in love with another man.
