La película “The Identical” está protagonizada por dos hermanos gemelos, que no se conocen pues al nacer son separados y dados en adopción a dos familias distintas. El motivo es la Gran Depresión, una crisis económica brutal que sufrieron los Estados Unidos en los años 30, y que hacen que su madre no pueda mantenerlos. Uno de los dos hermanos gemelos es afortunado. Se trata de Drexel Hemsey, que se convierte en una de las estrellas del rock americano de los años 50, teniendo mucha fama, mujeres y dinero. Su hermano gemelo, por el contrario, no tiene tanta suerte. Se llama Ryan Wade, y es adoptado por una familia muy religiosa. De hecho, su padre adoptivo es reverendo, y opina que su hijo tiene que seguir los pasos predicando la palabra de Dios. Sin embargo, a Ryan lo que le gusta es la música. Por eso, se va a tener que enfrentar a su familia, aunque eso es algo que le da igual si tiene que hacerlo para cumplir su sueño, que es cantar.

En el siglo pasado el párroco del pueblo de Briarville, el reverendo Phineas Warren, logró capturar al troll Trantor, una monstruosa criatura que atrapa niños y los convierte en muñecos enterrándolos bajo un roble. Antes de ser sepultado, Trantor lanza sobre él una maldición: sus descendientes serán cada vez más tontos.

Ernest, empleado de mantenimiento y "chapuzas oficial" de un campamento juvenil, sueña con ser monitor. El gobernador envía al campamento a un grupo de muchachos del correccional para seguir un programa de reinserción social. Los instructores no son capaces de ocuparse de estos chicos y Ernest encuentra la ocasión de ver cumplidos sus sueños. La situación se complica cuando el propietario de una compañía minera quiere apoderarse del terreno sobre el que se asienta el campamento.
