Phong creció en un pequeño pueblo en el centro de Vietnam, el menor de seis hijos. Desde que era un niño, Phong sintió que era una niña con el cuerpo de un niño que no coincide. No fue hasta que se mudó a Hanoi para ir a la universidad a los 20 años cuando Phong descubrió que no era el único en el mundo con esta situación.
