Inspired by actual events, MURU is the story of a local Police Sergeant 'Taffy' Tawharau (Cliff Curtis), who must choose between his badge and his people, when the Government launches an armed raid through his Ruatoki community, on a school day.

Alice (Melanie Lynskey) vive en los suburbios de Christchurch, "el lugar más seguro del mundo", pero ansía vivir aventuras al estilo americano (pistolas, asesinatos, sexo, drogas, etc.). Craig (Dean O'Gorman), su mejor amigo, se cambia su nombre por "Johnny" porque "Craig" no es suficientemente heroico para Alice. Está enamorado de Alice y a ella le gusta salir con él por su coche, un Valiant descapotable que él mismo montó. Juntos recorrerán las carreteras de Nueva Zelanda recogiendo autoestopistas y en busca de emociones. Un día, recogen a un tejano con botas de piel de serpiente...
