Consigue, no obstante, encontrar a su padre, Walter (James Caan), un editor de libros infantiles adicto al trabajo y al dinero que figura en la lista negra de Santa Claus. Buddy también encuentra a una nueva madre (Mary Steenburgen) y descubre que su hermanastro de diez años (Daniel Tay) no cree en los elfos ni en Santa Claus ni en las Navidades. En realidad todo el mundo parece haber olvidado el verdadero significado de la Navidad.
