Sumptuous filming of the journey of a shipwrecked Japanese expedition from the Pacific Ocean across Siberia to the court of Catherine the Great of Russia. A Russo-Japanese co-production of a unique event in history which was the hit of Cannes and other film festivals but did not receive wide distribution despite its huge scope, high production values, and very human story of culture clash.

The political drama is set in the Stalin's Soviet Union after the Second World War. A British archaeologist Andrei Miller is working in Iran. He is mistakenly kidnapped and arrested by the KGB. He is falsely accused of spying and wrongfully sentenced to a Gulag prison-camp in Siberia.

Ivan is old Russia: thick, dour, hard-working, often brutish; he misses Communism. He drives a taxi and one night meets Alexi, a new Russian, a musician, an alcoholic, irresponsible. Alexi stiffs Ivan for the fare, so Ivan tracks him down and a love-hate relationship ensues. When Alexi lets the bath water run over in Ivan's flat and Ivan must pay 500 rubles for repairs, he tries to force Alexi into day labor to repay him. It's hopeless. Then, suddenly, Alexi is discovered, goes on a jazz tour of America, becomes a celebrity, and returns in triumph. Ivan longs to renew the friendship, and it looks as if he may get what he wants.

La civilización humana ha sido destruida, aunque quedan vestigios de ella. Un hombre llega a un paraje con la intención de visitar un famoso museo que ha quedado aislado en medio del mar. Los habitantes del lugar, que mantienen ciertas costumbres del pasado, se relacionan con unos extraños seres embrutecidos, que viven aislados en una especie de colonia. El interés del visitante por el museo se va transformando en una obsesión por entender las manifestaciones religiosas de los confinados.

En el invierno de 1942 durante la ocupación nazi de Rusia en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, los guerrilleros partisanos, dirigidos por Ivan Lokotkov, han capturado a un soldado alemán. Lazarev, les cuenta que él era un sargento en el ejército rojo antes de ser obligado por los nazis a servir a Alemania, pero muchos de sus captores quieren ejecutarle. El teniente Erofeyich, más comprensivo, quiere conseguir recuperar a Lazarev para la lucha. Lazarev no es ejecutado, sino que por el contrario le dan una ocasión de probar su lealtad; tiene que ir de nuevo al ferrocarril controlado por los nazis, donde todo el mundo le conoce, y secuestrar un tren con los suministros y alimentos.

The returning soldier Kuzma Kadkin on the train tells how well he lived before the war, and that everyone in the area knows him. An accidental fellow traveler, a young mother, leaves her child, a one and a half year old boy, Kadkin, to run away at the junction for water, but lags behind the train. Kuzma has no choice but to bring the baby home...

Mytyl y Tyltyl, dos niños hijos de un leñador, buscan ”El Pájaro Azul de la Felicidad” para curar a una vecinita enferma. En su viaje, los guía la Luz y los acompaña su viejo amigo El Pan y su compañero más fiel, El Perro. En su búsqueda llegan al castillo de La Noche, al engañoso Jardín de los Sueños, al Campo de la Voluptuosidad y, finalmente, al Bosque, de cuyos terrores logran huir ayudados por El Perro. Por fin, encuentran un lugar apacible: el Reino del Futuro, donde esperan su nacimiento generaciones enteras. Allí vive El Padre del Tiempo, que observa cuidadosamente lo que la tierra puede necesitar. En su viaje los niños han descrito un círculo completo para encontrar El Pájaro Azul de la Felicidad, que, en definitiva, estaba donde había estado siempre: en su propia casa.

The movie is set during the last days of a foreign intervention against Soviet Russia. Police are searching everywhere for a Bolshevik named Brodsky but cannot find him. Meanwhile, a man named Michel Voronov serves as a teacher to a rich woman's son, Zhen'ka.
