Yang Hua and Miao Wei form a happily married couple living in Wuhai, a small city surrounded with astonishing desert scenery in Inner Mongolia. In a mining town in western China, separately, we follow three members of a family. Each individual family members’ story flows from one to another chronologically, although they do not simply trace the continual development of a single family. Their lives are inextricably bound together as they symbolically represent the men and women from all mining towns who must accept their thwarted dreams and aspirations, and learn to accept their lot in life.

The film tells about a struggle of love and revenge. The story begins decades ago, in the campus filled with poetic youth. Nanjing, Tokyo, Las Vegas, across three different cities the shades of coldness, collision and emptiness change in turns, reflecting the protagonists’ human struggles under different life situations and emotional states.
