Isla de Elba, 1814. Martino (Elio Germano), un joven e idealista profesor está enamorado de la hermosa baronesa Emilia (Monica Bellucci). En 1814, Napoleón (Auteuil) se ve obligado a abdicar y es desterrado a la isla de Elba. Una vez allí, le ofrece a Martino el puesto de bibliotecario. Es la oportunidad que el joven esperaba para matar al emperador y vengar la muerte de miles de jóvenes soldados. Pero, para su decepción, Napoleón ya no es lo que era.
