Puccini’s last opera is all about riddles. The Emperor of China rules over the Forbidden City of Peking. His unmarried daughter, the Princess Turandot, has refused her hand to all her princely suitors by putting them to a test. She sets them three riddles; if they do not answer them correctly, they will lose their heads. As unlucky suitors fail and fall, up steps Calaf, a prince of the Tatar people. Daniel Kramer’s new staging in Geneva transposes the old fairy tale to a futuristic world where Turandot’s magic holds sway. In a dystopian game show, reminiscent of Hunger Games, the Princess presides over a surveillance state in which men are culled and the reproduction of the human race is conducted in breeding labs.

Opera en directo para exhibición en cines europeos desde el Gran Teatro Liceu de Barcelona. Macbeth, escrita en cuatro actos y diez cuadros, con libreto en italiano de Francesco Maria Piave y Andrea Maffei, basado en la tragedia homónima de William Shakespeare, se estrenó en el Teatro della Pergola, de Florencia el 14 de marzo de 1847. Fue la décima ópera de Verdi y también la primera de las obras del dramaturgo inglés que adaptó a la escena operística. El compositor escribió sobre ella: "He aquí este Macbeth, el cual amo más que a todas mis otras óperas".

John Copley's enduring production of one of the most famously melodious and popular of all operas is a classic of the Royal Opera repertory. With historically accurate designs by Julia Trevelyan Oman and an excellent cast headed by Hibla Gerzmava and Teodor Ilincai, this 2009 revival, in which conductor Andris Nelsons makes a distinguished Royal Opera House debut, does full justice to Puccini's masterpiece.
