Los habitantes de Krekovice, un pueblo cercano a Praga, viven en régimen de cooperativa, siguiendo el modelo soviético impuesto en Checoslovaquia después de la II Guerra Mundial. Por este motivo, todos son responsables de Otik, un joven retrasado que vive solo. La cooperativa decide que Otik trabaje como ayudante de Pávek, un camionero. Pero, tras una larga temporada, Pávek decide prescindir de él, pues es demasiado despistado y sólo le crea problemas. Así que otro vecino del pueblo tendrá que admitir al joven como ayudante. Pero surge un problema nuevo: alguien está intentado apropiarse de la casa de Otik sin que éste se dé cuenta. La cooperativa deberá encontrar una solución.

The teenage Jirka (J. Procházka) likes to spend time with his aunt (Š. Ranošová) in a secluded village. He does not feel comfortable at home. His mother (J. Vaňková) and stepfather Ivan (P. Pelzer) scrape together every penny to save up for an expensive kitchen set and a Persian carpet. His mother is not very fond of his aunt and does not like Jirka's visits. On her next visit, the aunt gives Jirka her husband's carpentry tools. Jirka meets Jakub (M. Holub), an old carpenter, who helps him repair an old kitchen sideboard. Jakub shows the boy how precious wood the sideboard is made of. The two become friends. However, their mother is about to throw the sideboard away

Major Kalas from the Prague criminal intelligence service has been sent to a small town of Dubá in North Bohemia to help with the investigation of the puzzling death of a child. A gypsy boy has been killed three weeks ago and his body found under a rock. As the investigation continues, another dead boy is found. The boy has bled to death after someone cut his artery with a handsaw. Both deaths are obviously the work of a murderer - a perverted pedophile, sadist who gets sexual satisfaction from the sight of a young boy's blood.
