A young man swims across the rivers and lakes of Britain to a soundtrack of assorted nationalistic music. As he passes people on the banksides including children, lovers and a tramp their thoughts and conversations are also heard. Ultimately, after walking through a wood at night, the boy returns to the water and appears to sink below the surface.

Helen lives in London with her father and her kids. John, her husband, is an aid-worker in Eastern Europe. He has been gone many months. Helen is desperately anxious that he should come home. Taking the kids to school one morning, she is killed in a car accident. She remains caught in limbo, trapped between life and death. Many miles away, in war-torn Eastern Europe, John is unaware that his wife has died. As Helen herself is unaware that she is dead. Thus begins, a four-day Odyssey: Grandpa and the kids must come to terms with Helen's death; John must travel across a war-torn land as he tries to reach home; and Helen must stand helplessly observing her own existence as it comes back to haunt her - until at last she is reconciled with John, and thus released.

En un pequeño pueblo escocés trabaja Movern Callar -Samantha Morton- como cajera en un supermercado. Una tarde vuelve a su casa y encuentra el cadáver de su novio. Todo indica que ha sido un suicidio. Movern decide entonces coger una novela recién terminada de su novio y salir de allí. Tras vender la novela y coger el dinero del adelanto por la publicación, Morvern viaja a Ibiza a cambiar de vida.

1973, es verano en Glasgow. La ciudad tiene unos planes para las viviendas más pobres que no tienen agua caliente ni instalaciones de baño y mediante un programa de desarrollo se intenta realojar a los inquilinos que sufren este desastre. La situación se agrava aún más con la huelga de basureros poniendo en peligro la salud de los niños con las calles como criadero para las ratas.
