When the film West Side Story was released in 1961, New York's reviled Puerto Rican community gained some visibility and, over time, both in Spanish Harlem and the Bronx, neighborhoods plagued by poverty, drugs and crime, Hispanic identity was reborn and strengthened, thanks to a syncretic and intentionally popular music that eventually conquered the entire city.

More than a genre, salsa was a cultural movement that arose in a time of need for strengthening the Latino culture and spread across the world with such force that, 50 years later, is still moving the feet of dancers in the most inhospitable corners world. At the heart of the movement is the figure of Johnny Pacheco, know as one of the great musical legacies responsible for salsa music.

Ya habían pasado 8 años de la muerte de Hector y ya su leyenda, se hacia mas y mas grande al punto de que la cadena televisiva E Entrainment TV, decidió hacerle un documental sobre la vida de Hector, con la presencia de varios compañeros suyos en Fania como: Cheo, Ismael Miranda, Richie Ray, Roberto Roena y Bobby Cruz; y también otros músicos y conocedores de la historia de la salsa y de Hector en particular. El documental, narra de manera más enfática la desgracia de Hector que su talento; aunque lo resalta solo al principio de su carrera. Da la impresión que ya después no tenia mucho que ofrecer, siendo esto algo falso, ya que Hector fue un cantante de muy alta calidad hasta en sus presentaciones después de su caída del 9º piso, que es entonces ahí cuando su calidad y salud decae gravemente. Sin embargo el documental narra varios hechos y detalles importantes de su vida que valen la pena conocer.

El 26 de agosto 1971 la ciudad de New York dio a luz un sonido que cambiaría la música latina para siempre. Esa noche en el reconocido club nocturno Cheetah, la Fania All Stars subió al escenario con su sonido único que hizo eco a través de todas las fronteras y llegó a todos los países. Fania Records reedita en DVD “Our Latin Thing”, la película que desencadenó el movimiento salsero de los años setenta. Del concierto salió un doble LP titulado “Live At The Cheetah” y la histórica película “Our Latin Thing”. Su director, Leon Gast, documentó lo acontecido en Cheetah con el añadido de imágenes de los músicos en el estudio de grabación y escenas del Spanish Harlem neoyorquino. La edición del 40 aniversario de “Our Latin Thing” incluye un DVD con la película remasterizada, y dos CDs con la música de la película y algunos temas adicionales, que pueden ser adquiridos en la página oficial del sello.

The film presents a balanced account of his life through the investigation of the circumstances that surrounded his life, as well as his enigmatic death in the streets of the Bronx on March 26, 1983.
