Liu and Deng are a couple both in their 70s who have been married for nearly half a century and lived in a small inland city of China. The family of Liu and Deng is a typical ordinary family of China. The eldest daughter Liqin, divorced with a teenage son, lives with them. The second daughter Xiaomin and youngest son Xujun live in far away cities, married and with their own families. They are also too busy to visit the parents, therefore the old couple decide to travel a long way to visit them. It will be a special journey where they will do everything they can to keep the family tied together despite the distance, being the family their sole purpose in life.

En 1937, China, durante la segunda guerra chino-japonesa, John (Christian Bale) llega a una iglesia católica en Nanjing para preparar a un sacerdote para su entierro. A su llegada se ve convertido en el único adulto entre un grupo de alumnas del convento y las prostitutas de un burdel cercano. Cuando se encuentra en la posición indeseada de protector de los dos grupos ante los horrores del ejército invasor japonés, descubre el significado del sacrificio y el honor.

The story follows the elephant keeper in the Beijing Zoo who maintains an aquarium of fish in her home (hence the two-animal title), and her lesbian lover, a fabric saleswoman in an outdoor market. Her relationship is tested, however, when her recently divorced mother returns to town in the hope of setting her daughter up in marriage. Further complicating matters is one of Xiaoqun's ex-lovers also returning to her life with the law in pursuit.
