De visita en el pueblo, Meryl y Milly se vuelven a encontrar con Vash, pero antes de un feliz reencuentro, la banda de Gasbag entra a Macca aunque se topará con Vash en su camino. Película basada en el manga original, si bien cuenta una historia completamente nueva que tampoco se narró en el anime.

Tras intensas batallas, en las que venció a Sendo, Makunochi Ippo alcanza el título de Campeón de Japón del Peso Pluma. Así, Ippo pasa de "aspirante" a "campeón", y ya se ha decidido el rival para su primera defensa del título. Su nombre es Sanada Ikki, un fuerte rival que, optando a participar en dos clases, ha vuelto a la clase de Peso Pluma. Sanada tiene otra faceta como estudiante en la Universidad de Medicina, lo que le ayuda a conocer mejor el cuerpo humano, y dónde un puñetazo debe golpear para mermar lo más posible la resistencia y ejercer el mayor daño posible en el rival. Además, analiza su propia condición física desde una perspectiva médica, basándose en su ritmo respiratorio, ritmo cardíaco, lo que lo convierte en un boxeador con una de las tácticas más inteligentes. A esto hay que añadir que el entrenador de Sanada es Hama Dankichi, el rival de Chairman Kamogawa cuando él estaba en el ring.

Kosuke and Rikimaru: Dragon of Konpei Island was a 45 minute long anime TV special produced by J.C. Staff and broadcast on Japanese television in 1988. Similar to Dragon Ball, it was a martial arts adventure story featuring villains that could have stepped out of the Red Ribbon Army, typical Toriyama mecha, and a clone of Son Gohan's Haiya Dragon.
