Ren Pengnian 任彭年(1894-1968.2.23) . Director. Native of Shanghai. Trained at the Anglo-Chinese Book Guild, then joined the Shanghai Commercial Press at age 16. In 1918, transferred to theCommercial Press's new Motion Picture Division. Directed first film in 1919, a two-reel comedy titled "The Gambler." In 1921, Ren directed his first feature film, the highly successful "Yan Ruisheng" for the China Shadow Play Research Society. In 1926, started the Orient Film Company, to direct "The Worker's Wife." Became one of China's first generation of swordsman film directors in 1928, when he formed the Bright Moon film studio and directed its 13 part serial "Northeast Hero." (His future wife and business partner Wu Lizhu, had the female lead, becoming one of the first swordswomen heroines.) In 1935, directed the anti-Japanese film "Dark Violence," after which he returned to directing such martial arts epics as the six-part "Mistress of the Spear." As did many in the Chinese film community, Ren and Wu left Shanghai after the Japanese invasion, arriving eventually in Hong Kong, where they remained after the war. In Hong Kong, Ren became known for making Cantonese dialect martial arts and sword films in both classical and modern settings and usually featuring the martial exploits of heroines, with Wu Lizhu often cast in the lead role. After being semi-retired in the 1950s, Ren and Wu in 1960 resurrected the Bright Moon studio to make such movies as " Three Covert Female Investigators" and "Flying Heroine Huang Yingqiao Cracks the Diamond Theft Case." Their working partnership usually took the form of Ren Pengnian producing and directing the movie, with Wu Lizhu editing and often starring. Wu Lizhu retired after making her final screen appearance in 1961 and Ren Pengnian's last directing effort was in 1963, after which he also retired

The Flying Dragon gang goes on a rampage and the police Inspector is at his wits' end. He then commissions Wong Ngung, Wu Ngar and Heung Nga to help him catch the gang members. Suet-ying, a young woman, is addicted to gambling and owes a huge sum to the gambling den that belongs to the Flying Dragon gang. She has even signed IOUs. When the younger sister of Ying's husband sees that Ying is weighed down by worries, she asks Wu Ngar for help. Wu Ngar sneaks into the gambling den, but her behaviour is suspected by the gang leaders, Tai-kit and Tai-hong. Fortunately, Wong Ngung saves her. To get back the IOUs, Ying falls under the control of Hong and Kit. Master Lung has evil designs on Ying. He first kills Kit and seizes Ying. Hong then shoots and kills Lung. Wong Ngung and her two partners get back the IOUs for Ying. They notify the police Inspector to arrest the members of the Flying Dragon gang. Hong is shot and injured by Wong Ngung. He is arrested with the other gang members.

While Wong Fei Hung is away traveling, three ruthless villains pretend to establish a temple as a front for a range of criminal activities including kidnapping young woman to be used as sex workers. Wong’s wife is told about the goings on by a student and together they take on the gang. Eventually Wong Fei Hung returns and the operation is raided by the married couple and their students. But the villains have filled their temple with traps and secret rooms.

A sick king instructs his loyal minister Luo Zhengqing to guide and install the crown prince as king after his death. However, the minister of the army, Situ Yangming, makes a grab for power after the King's death and incarcerates the crown prince. Luo's daughter disguises herself as the male bandit Robin Hood, robbing government offices to help the poor. Meanwhile, Situ orders captain of the imperial guards, Zhang Zhonggeng, to kill the crown prince. Zhang is a loyalist and conspires with Lady Robin Hood to save the crown prince. When Situ discovers that the prince has escaped, he falsifies the late King's will and has himself crowned as king. However, the female Robin Hood has stolen the original will. The female Robin Hood kills Situ and installs the crown prince as the ruler.

In the summer of 1920, Shanghai was scandalized by a sensational murder, a high-profile case and subsequent trial that was the ongoing topic of conversation in the city's numerous cafes, clubs and teahouses. Among the various reasons for its notoriety, two stand out: first, the victim was a high-class prostitute, well known in Shanghai; second, the murderer had been a mid-level manager in a respected foreign firm, a playboy who in Manhattan might have been termed a "prominent young man about town." There were detailed press reports daily as the case wound its way through the judicial system.

A wealthy man takes a grieving widow as his wife, buying her from her father-in-law, although the widow wants to remain true to her late husband's memory. Fortunately, the rich man's daughter admires and sympathizes with the filial widow, helps her hide in the countryside and then covertly gives her enough money to flee elsewhere and maintain her chastity.
