Tras salir de la cárcel, a la que fue a parar por falsificar la contabilidad de un gángster, Poole (John Hurt) tiene que ocultarse. Encuentra refugio en Dublín, en la pensión de una mujer posesiva y de su tímida hija Alice (Brenda Blethyn). A Poole le apasionan los trenes eléctricos, especialmente el Orient Express. Pronto Alice queda prendada del huésped y de su colección de trenes, con los que juegan para evadirse de la realidad.
