Matilde Soto Landeta (September 20, 1910 – January 26, 1999) was a Mexican filmmaker and screenwriter, the first female to serve in those roles during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. Her films focused on the portrayal of strong, realistic female protagonists in a patriarchal world.

The film features Fernandez himself as a character named Rogellio Torres. The lion's share of the footage, however, is devoted to the romance between Esperanza, granddaughter of a common laborer, and Jose Luis Castro, the firebrand son of a landowner. Joining a revolutionary movements, Castro is disowned by his father, but Esperanza remains loyally by his side. Later on, Castro's father is killed by outlaws; in seeking vengeance, he sacrifices his own life, while Esperanza carries on his revolutionary work with their young son in tow.

En un mismo día, son dejados en la puerta de un asilo de monjas, con cartas, los bebés Carmelo y Adriana Águila, hijos de rica familia y Polito Sol, hijo de pobres. Pasados doce años los niños huyen del lugar y crecen juntos hasta convertirse en un trío inseparable, ganándose la vida en la calle vendiendo periódicos y lotería. El padre de Polito, se enriquece con la lotería y comienza a buscar a su hijo, a quien no reconoce cuando éste le vende un periódico. Pasados los años los tres abandonados se dedicarán al espectáculo convirtiéndose en el trío Águila o Sol en busca de la fortuna que no tuvieron de pequeños. Los destinos de los cuatro personajes se cruzarán, en medio de números de carpa, borracheras y cómicos enredos.
