La familia Gabarre-Mendoza celebra el cumpleaños de su nieto cuando una inspección policial interrumpe el festejo. En la Cañada Real, un barrio de chabolas a las afueras de Madrid, surgen tensiones entre las autoridades y los vecinos, ya que los terrenos han sido vendidos y las familias son obligadas a abandonar las casas que ellos mismos han construido. Mientras, la madre, Agustina, pasa de ser una mujer muy alegre a vivir atormentada por el miedo; el padre, David, un chatarrero muy trabajador, intenta encontrar una solución, pero la burocracia del sistema les falla. Entretanto, los miembros más jóvenes de la familia -David hijo, la nuera y madre adolescente María y el joven Alejandro- luchan a su manera con sus vidas en la cuerda floja.

Escorted by wailing sirens, Aziz and Olek dash across an empty plain. The Dutch-speaking Aziz clearly does not know the terrain. Desperately, he tries to keep up with his burly companion, no matter how often the latter tells him to get lost. In a snow-clad and misty forest, Aziz drops behind after all. All alone, he is left to his own gut feeling. But perhaps this comes quite naturally to him.

Slowly Stella starts recognizing that 'to live' isn't just about gaining experiences along the way, but also means to root and accept life as it is.
