Michel Poiccard es un ex-figurante de cine admirador de Bogart. Tras robar un coche en Marsella para ir a París, mata fortuitamente a un motorista de la policía. Sin remordimiento alguno por lo que acaba de hacer, prosigue el viaje. En París, tras robar dinero a una amiga, busca a Patricia, una joven burguesa americana, que aspira a ser escritora y vende el New York Herald Tribune por los Campos Elíseos; sueña también con matricularse en la Sorbona y escribir algún día en ese periódico. En Europa cree haber hallado la libertad que no conoció en América. Lo que Michel ignora es que la policía lo está buscando por la muerte del motorista.
En el curso de una investigación un inspector de policía se queda prendado de una joven drogadicta, relacionada con la víctima del caso que él investiga. Se plantea entonces renunciar a sus pesquisas, pero entonces descubre al responsable del crimen.
Trois jour à vivre (Three Days to Live) takes off with a bang when two-bit actor Daniel Gelin witnesses a murder. He didn't see the killer, but that doesn't stop him from claiming that he did in order to get his name into the papers. Sure enough, the murderer targets Gelin as his next victim. Our hero is temporarily rescued by Jeanne Moreau, an aspiring actress who has always had a crush on him.

Employed in a beauty salon, Amédée must undergo a pentothal injection. The dose is too strong; suddenly Amédée reveals the truth to everyone; to clients of the institute; to his cheating wife; to his boss that he robs; to the tax collector; etc. When the effects of the truth serum wear off, everyone returns contentedly to their little swamp.
Petrus, a Montmartre photographer, is accidentally wounded by Migo, a dancer at the Frou Frou night club, when she is trying to shoot her faithless lover Rodrigue, a counterfeiter. Though Petrus tries to reconcile the lovers, Migo lands up with him after Rodrigue is finally killed by another jealous dancer.
