Tracey Berkowitz (Ellen Page) es un adolescente de 15 años, que como muchas chicas de su edad podría parecer "normal" (sea lo que eso signifique), pero en realidad ella se odia a sí misma. La gran mayoría de la película transcurre en un autobús urbano mientras realiza un viaje nocturno. Tracey se encuentra traumatizada y se sienta en la parte trasera del bus, tapada tan solo por una cortina de baño, buscando a su hermano pequeño Sonny, que se ha perdido. Poco a poco, se nos irá desvelando cómo es la vida de Tracey y cómo ha llegado a este punto.
