When Whitestar's son, the young horse Silverstar, gallops into the woods in a barn fire, he is found by 16-year-old Esmee. The two have a special bond. After refusing to follow him, she turns up uninvited later and still acts jealous and possessive. Grief follows for everyone, working up to a convoluted finale.
