Cuatro niños huérfanos, Henry, Jessie, Violet y Benny, aparecen una noche en una pequeña ciudad. No tienen dónde ir ni a quién acudir, pero caminando por el bosque cercano encuentran un vagón de tren abandonado en un claro. Pronto los chicos convierten este viejo vagón en su hogar, un pequeño paraíso con todas sus comodidades, alejado de los adultos. Pero Henry, el mayor, tiene que buscar trabajo en la ciudad, y cuando, finalmente, la pequeña Violet enferma, no les quedará más remedio que llamar al doctor.
