Lincoln Mathers es un ambicioso analista neoyorquino que se traslada junto a su mujer Sara y su hija Beth a una antigua mansión londinense. Una vez allí, Sara desentierra accidentalmente parte del perturbador pasado de la ciudad y es poseída por un viejo espíritu.
