El modus operandi de Burke y Hare resulta siempre el mismo en sus inicios: el asesinato de viejos sin recursos económicos perpetrados cerca o dentro de la casa del primero, provista de habitaciones para huéspedes, que regenta junto a su esposa. Pero el perfil de las víctimas cambia cuando Hare intenta violar a Mary Patterson, la díscola y alcohólica prometida de Christopher Jackson, uno de sus alumnos menos brillantes de la clase de anatomía cuyas clases dirige Knox.
