La película plantea la oposición entre el llano corrompido (la Tierra Baja) y la montaña incontaminada (la Tierra Alta). El protagonista, Manelic, un hombre sencillo y primitivo, quiere casarse con Marta, una chica de la Tierra Baja que hasta entonces había sido obligada a mantener relaciones íntimas con su amo, Sebastià.

Con el propósito de conseguir a María Rosa, la mujer de la que está profundamente enamorado, Marsal asesina a un prestamista odiado por todo el pueblo y hace recaer las sospechas sobre su amigo Andrés, el marido de su amada. Encarcelado Andrés, Marsal se convierte en el protector de María Rosa mientras espera el desarrollo de los acontecimientos.

Sebastien assures Marta that Manelich knows of their relationship and will not interfere, but she discovers that her husband is ignorant of the affair and, in fact, loves her. Because she comes to return her husband's love, she confesses her past, after which Manelich kills Sebastien.
