Un profesor de psicología universitario, Yamamoto, y su mujer Fumiko son padres de dos niños. Uno de ellos, Yudo, sufre de parálisis infantil y es objeto de burlas por parte de sus compañeros de escuela. Inspirados en la fuerza de voluntad de su hijo, la pareja decide emplear todos sus ahorros para fundar una escuela especial en la cual otros niños con el mismo problema puedan recibir atenciones y construir la necesaria autoconfianza con la cual enfrentar la vida.
