Una madre de mediana edad escribe cuatro cartas a su hija de diez años para que su padre se las vaya entregando. La primera es para el día en que cumpla 12 años y celebre su Bat Mitzva (cuando el pueblo judío considere adulta a Jenny). La segunda es para el día de su boda. La tercera para el nacimiento de su primer hijo. Y la cuarta es para el momento en el que se sienta desesperada, donde la recomienda viajar a Jerusalem para encontrar, quizá, las respuestas que anda buscando.
Un director de orquesta es contratado para dirigir en París la ópera de Wagner "Tannhauser". Sin embargo, cuando llega a la capital francesa, tropieza con toda clase de obstáculos para realizar su trabajo: unas veces debido a las exigencias de los sindicatos y otras a causa de los caprichos de algunos cantantes. Así, su primer encuentro con la diva es frustrante, aunque acaban viviendo una apasionada historia de amor.

Uri, in for 12 years for armed robbery, and Issan, in for 50 years for PLO violence, command the respect of their cells. When the Arabs are framed for the murder of a Jewish prisoner and a young inmate commits suicide rather than lie about what happened, Uri and Issan form an unlikely partnership, leading the security block on a strike. Prison officials try to break it. In the background are Uri's daughter and Issan's wife, women of beauty and passion who embody the distance from inside a cell to the outside.
