Zofia is an elderly woman living in an retirement home. Separate from the rest, she talks seldom and then only about visiting her daughter's family for Christmas. When she comes to her daughter's home unannounced, her stay is spoiled by the damage to her son-in-law doctorate bookmarks which she removed unknowingly during dusting. She then spends Christmas in an empty restaurant, surrounded by waiters and musicians waiting to be tipped.
The main hero obsessively wants to become an actor. The would-be actor fails two entrance exams to the state acting school and has a nervous breakdown. Eventually he commits himself to the mental institution where patients are rehabilitated by doing some artwork. He refuses to paint but does some acting. He participates in a play where a lead, playing Oedipus, actually blinds himself. Out of the institution he has dreams of killing his father, but finally seems to be ready to start over again and either act without the state license or take another job.
After the war, the community of mountaineers is eager to start their own sawmill. When the communist authorities come to take over the sawmill, a rebellion starts.
Imperio Nuevo. Egipto se encuentra en una difícil coyuntura. Por una parte, los asirios amenazan con invadir el país y, por otra, el empobrecimiento del pueblo es cada vez mayor. Una vez proclamado faraón, el joven Ramsés XIII (faraón inexistente) decide poner remedio a esta situación sirviéndose de las riquezas de la casta sacerdotal, que concentra en sus manos el poder económico, religioso y, de hecho, también el político. Prueba de ello es que el faraón fue derrotado y sus reformas nunca se llevaron a cabo.
