And yet the humour in this multilayered masterpiece is distinctly wry, for all the main characters exhibit an array of human weaknesses that are implacably exposed by Verdi and his librettist Arrigo Boito.

Geneviève es una joven que vive con su madre y le ayuda en la tienda de paraguas que tienen en Cherburgo. Está enamorada de Guy, un joven mecánico, con el que piensa casarse a pesar de la oposición de su madre, que considera a Geneviève demasiado joven y a Guy demasiado pobre. Para pagar una deuda, la madre se ve obligada a vender un collar a un rico joyero que se enamora de Geneviève desde el primer momento. Mientras tanto, Guy tendrá que ausentarse dos años para ir a Argelia a hacer el servicio militar.
