Budapest, 1956. Una joven estrella de waterpolo, Karcsi, se ve involucrado en la revolución anti-soviética que se cuece en las calles de Hungría. En un principio, le motiva la aventura, pero la joven y apasionada Viki capta su atención, consiguiendo que Karcsi se adentre con ella en el corazón de la revuelta.
Poco después, tras la retirada de los rusos, la revolución parece haber logrado sus objetivos. Karcsi vuelve a su equipo de waterpolo para jugar en las olimpiadas de Melbourne, sin saber que las fuerzas rusas retornan en su empeño de apoderarse de las calles húngaras... Ben Kline is an American television star and a bankable name, who is cast to portray the Hungarian writer Miklos Radnoti, whose journal of poems was found with his body, buried in one of Hungary’s mass graves. Kline is also the son of a Holocaust survivor and has long resented his father’s refusal to speak about the War. Now given the opportunity to play the role of a hero, but faced with the reality of a victim, the boundaries between truth and illusion begin to blur.

The ruined castle is inhabited by architects who, feeling the spirit of the place, want to direct the modernization of the settlement below the castle from here. Despite the residents' protests, the architects want to make the people happy by force.
