Médico judío en Alemania, el neurólogo Ludwig Guttmann llegó al Reino Unido huyendo de los nazis al inicio de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y se hizo cargo de la unidad de parapléjicos de un hospital en Buckinghamshire.
